Introduction

You can use iTunes to add album art to your audio files. Unfortunately, if you use iTunes to automatically download the album art, the album art it downloads is stored in an external file, which makes it useless for SSL as album art has to be embedded in the ID3 tag in order for it to show in SSL. This article describes how you can add the album art to your audio files and have it show in SSL.

Note: SSL only supports album art for MP3 and AAC formatted files. Wav, AIFF, and OGG formats cannot store album art.

Manually

Highlight the file or files in question (you can do more than one at a time if they all have the same album art) in your iTunes library. Locate the .jpg or other picture file of the album art and drag into in the lower left part of the iTunes screen where it says "Drag Album Artwork Here." You don't necessarly need to have the .jpeg file on your actual computer. You can browse sites like Discogs or Juno Records and other online music stores for album art, and drag the picture from the site onto the "Drag Album Artwork Here" box in iTunes.

Repeat for more files. And that's about it. The album art should be embedded into the ID3 tag now and show in SSL.

Automatically

If you already have downloaded the album art, but iTunes put it in its external album art folder, you can use this Applescript named Embedart to automatically embed the artwork into the tag. This script is for Macs only.
