Introduction
This article describes how to connect the SSL box physically.
Start
A typical DJ setup consists of one turntable on the left, the mixer in the middle and a turntable on the right. The left turntable controls the left SSL virtual deck, the right turntable controls the right SSL virtual deck. Connect the RCA cables of the left turntable to INPUT 1 of the SL-1 box. Connect the RCA cables of the right turntable to INPUT 2 of the SL-1 box. Connect the ground wire of your turntable(s) to the ground post(s) on the back your mixer.
For SSL's output:
- Connect the LINE 1 output of the SL-1 box to one of the line inputs (CH 1, for example) of your mixer with one of the RCA cables provided in the SSL package
(red cable inside the red circle in the diagram below).
- Connect the LINE 2 output of the SL-1 box to the other line input (CH 2) of your mixer with another of the RCA cables provided
(red cable inside the red circle in the diagram below).
If you still wish to play your normal vinyl records in addition with SSL:
- Connect the THRU 1 output of the SL-1 box to the phono input (CH 1) of your mixer
(yellow cable inside the red circle in the diagram below).
- Connect the THRU 2 output of the SL-1 box to the other phono input (CH 2) on your mixer
(yellow cable inside the red circle in the diagram below).
| IMPORTANT: Make sure the "LINE OUT 1/2" is connected to "LINE IN 1/2" on your mixer AND make sure you switch your mixer to "Line" (NOT "Phono") to hear music coming from ScratchLIVE |
| VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure the "LINE OUT 1/2" is connected to "LINE IN 1/2" on your mixer AND make sure you switch your mixer to "Line" (NOT "Phono") to hear music coming from ScratchLIVE. If you connected it wrong you will only hear the loud SSL vinyl "beeeeep". If you dont hear anything you might forgot to switch to "Line" on your mixer, or there is no song playing in SSL at all. |
Connect the SL-1 box to your computer via the USB cable provided in the SSL package. Connect the 9V, 300mAmp, center pin positive polarity DC adaptor to the SL-1 box (optional, DC adaptor NOT included).
There is also a FAQ covering " Do I need an external power supply? What is it good for?"
Mixer settings
- To hear what SSL plays, that is your mp3/wav/aiff/ogg audio files, switch the channels on your mixer to LINE.
- To play your normal vinyl records, switch the channels on your mixer to PHONO. Note that if you switch to phono with the SSL control vinyl playing, all you will hear is a the loud beeeeepppppppppp sound of the control signal.
I don't use turntables, I use CDJs. Can I still play regular CDs?
Yes you can still play your regular CDs, however, since CD players use line level output, and SSL uses line level output as well, you are going to need a mixer that has at least four (4) line level inputs, two for SSL's output and two for the THRU outputs. This shouldn't be a problem for most four channel mixers (e.g. Pioneer DJM-500/600/800, Denon X-1500, Allen & Heath Xone 64/92, Korg Zero 4, Ecler Nuo 4/5). Unfortunately, most two (and three) channel mixers do not have four line level inputs, usually only two phono and two line. Some newer model 2 channel mixers though have a selectable phono/line switch on the back of the mixer, which will allow for four line inputs total.
