Introduction

The age-old decision. Should a person consider an alternate platform for SSL? This is an especially valid point as many users may be considering a latop specifically for the use of SSL. Hence, we attempt to answer it truthfully, and impartially...

Points To Consider

Neutral:

  • When a new version of SSL comes out, it comes out on both platforms simultaneously.
  • It may be easier to use the OS one is familiar with. Switching sides often comes with a steep learning curve!
  • When pricing hardware it is important to remember that SSL's specs are extremely untaxing. Used hardware on either side is inexpensive.

Pro-PC:

  • In either desktop or laptop form, a new PC which has comparable specs to a Macintosh is usually cheaper.
  • Finding support in your informal network of friends for other issues surrounding the use of your PC will be easier as Windows is the dominant OS globally.

Pro-Mac:

  • Apple hardware is generally seen as more reliable than comparable PC hardware.
  • The infamous "Apple Tax" has diminished greatly since Apple's move to Intel processors.
  • The MacOS X platform is narrowly favored in the audio world, which negates Windows' market preponderance to some extent.
  • As Apple's hardware is standardized you can expect fewer unexplainable system issues. Any issues are normally consistent and reproducible, and thus easily worked around.

Conclusion

The truth is that it shouldn't be much of a deciding factor. SSL is extremely platform-agnostic, and support on both sides is excellent. As such, personal preference and cost should be the major factors. Just don't think that just because you choose one platform over the other you will magically inoculate yourself from issues with using SSL.
