ITunes bought tracks

Why can't I see or play my iTunes store bought tracks in ScratchLIVE?

The answer is pretty straight forward. Most iTunes store bought tracks are "protected" with a so called Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection. DRM is a means to prevent music piracy, amongst other things, however this DRM protection also prevents basically any audio application (except iTunes, of course, and iPods) to use/play those tracks, including ScratchLIVE (but also all other similar DJ programs like Torq, Traktor Scratch, Ableton LIVE, Virtual DJ, etc.). In addition, iTunes store bought files are not in mp3 format, they are in AAC format. Up until recently, ScratchLIVE did not support AAC formatted files. However, ScratchLIVE version 1.8.0 and above supports non-DRM AAC files.

Solution

The only solution right now is to burn these iTunes store bought tracks to a CD (as audio, not data) and then re-import them into a format which is not protected and which is supported by SSL, like mp3 for example.

NOTE! There's a bug in the current 1.8.1 version where it DOES import iTunes DRM files and you can even load them to a deck, but no waveform appears. This is a bug and you should not be able to even import or load these files.

What about iTunes Plus files?

iTunes has recently begun selling non-DRM protected files, which are known as iTunes Plus files. These files CAN be played in ScratchLIVE (version 1.8.0+ only) and other programs. You can tell a file on iTunes store is a Plus file as it will have a plus symbol next to the price...

if you must buy from iTunes, and want to play the song(s) in ScratchLIVE, try to buy the Plus file. Note however, that not many songs on iTunes are Plus files.
