Introduction

This article covers questions about the external powersupply for the SSL.

Start

The SSL package does not come with a powersupply. Usually it is not needed as the laptop's USB port should be able to power the SSL box by itself. Unfortunately not all laptops meet the USB power specification (the SL1 needs 300mA during normal usage, but during startup time it draws more from the USB port which they can't supply but should supply due to the USB specs (read here for more details)). To make things even more confusing there are some laptops where the SL1 works fine sometimes without and external powersupply and on other times it does not. Some Mac users reported that all of sudden they could not use the SL1 without the external powersupply where it used to work before all the time.

Why using an external powersupply?

Even if you are lucky and your laptop can power up the SL1 you are advised to use an external powersupply due to the reason that if your computer crashes and you have to restart your computer the USB ports will be unpowered thus the SL1 box will not work. Not a big problem if the computer is not running? It is a problem cause you will not be able to use the thru ports on the SL1 box either! So no backup vinyl will be useable cause the signal from the turntables to the mixer passing the SL1 box is interrupted.

So always use an external power supply.
