Introduction
For most people SSL runs flawlessly from day one. Some experience audio dropouts. This article describe typical symptoms and solutions to get rid of dropouts.
Start
If you experience audio drops this can have several causes.
Without USB dropout indicator lighting
Lets start with pops and crackles while you don't see the USB dropout indicator.
Proper Calibration
Did you calibrate properly?
- Make sure you have a proper signal.
- Make sure your control records are in a good shape. If not you will experience randoms slow-downs and crackles.
USB dropout indicator pops up
If the USB dropout indicator lights up this is because your computer missed one or more USB packets, due to...:
Reduce CPU load
Try reducing your CPU load. This is important esp. for slower machines. Try
- reducing the GUI refresh setting
- raise the USB buffer size, lower the audio cache.
- disable all unneccessary applications and services running in the background
- disable Antivirus programs like Norton Antivirus, Kapersky etc. They are CPU hogs!
- pre-build your song overviews
- disable "auto build overviews" on the Setup screen
ACPI Problems
If you have a PC laptop, try
- removing the battery physically or disabling ACPI battery
- disable ACPI in general but be careful!, there are chances you might mess up your PC, make sure you backup your machine (disabling ACPI helped on one of my laptops, but also disabling the internal battery helped.

Overheating
Some laptops overheat easily, this can result in reduced performance due to the fact that the CPU slows down to prevent any harm from overheating. Make sure your laptop does not over-heat
- get a cooling pad. See also Overheating issues.
- also try reducing the CPU load if nothing else helps
USB hubs
SSL does not work with USB hubs (at least not with the normal USB hubs)
- remove SSL from any USB hub, plug it directly into your computer
Different USB port
On MacbookPro's there is an issue with one of the USB ports
- try changing the USB port you attach your SSL device to.
