Introduction
This guide will show you how to convert your wav or AIFF files to mp3 using iTunes. To begin, first open iTunes.
Encoding Setting
Before you convert your .wav or .aiff songs to .mp3, you will probably want to change the encoding settings. iTunes' default encoding method is set to encode to AAC, which is not a supported audio format in SSL. You want to change this to mp3. To change these setting, click on Edit at the top, then select Preferences.
This will bring up the Preferences menu. Select the Advanced tab and then select the Importing subtab. In the Import Using box, click on the drop down arrow and select MP3 Encoder.
Next, click on the Setting box and select Custom from the list of choices.
The next screen that comes up will let you change the encoding options such as the mp3 bit rate, sample rate, stereo options, etc. When you first see the screen, all the options will be set to iTunes default encoding options.
However, you will more than likely want to change those settings. So, what bit rate should you encode to? It is beyond the scope of this guide to discuss what bit rate should be used. This is a highly debateable subject and quite frankly, it's all a matter of personal preference. But for the sake of example, 320kpbs will be shown. To change the bit rate, select the Stereo Bit Rate box and select 320 kpbs from the drop down menu.
Select 44,100Hz in the Sample Rate box, Stereo forom the Channels and Normal from the Stereo Mode box. It should look like this with everything selected as described.
Hit OK to save these setting. Hit OK again when it returns you to the Preferences menu.
Converting to mp3
Once you are back to the main iTunes screen, locate the file(s) you want to convert in your iTunes library or playlist. If they are not in your library or a playlist then you may drag and drop files into either the library or a playlist from Windows Explorer.
Select the file you want to encode. For multiple files, hold the CTRL key and click on the selected files. To select all the files in the list, click to highlight the first track in the list, then hold the SHIFT key and click on the very last file in the list. This will highlight all the files in the list.
Now, just right click the highlighted file(s) and select Convert Selection to MP3. You may also go to Advanced at the top and select Convert Selection to MP3.
That's it. iTunes will begin encoding the files. Once they are done converting you will hear a ding-ding type sound. By default the converted files are placed in (PCs)
C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Unknown Artist\Unknown Album\
If you wish you can chage the output directory in the Preferences menu, General tab.
