Introduction

This guide describes how to rip tracks from a CD using EAC on Windows.

Prerequisites

We need

  • EAC and
  • a binary compiled version of LAME. At this time we recommend using LAME v3.97 (dont let you confuse by the name, its not a beta version, you can get it from Rarewares (direct downloadlink, seems to be down, try 3.97 final from a local mirror here in the meantime).

Start

  • Unzip the downloaded LAME zip, and remember the path
  • Install EAC and start it.

You should see:

  • Now click on "EAC -> Compression Options"
  • click on the tab "External Compression",
  • check the box "Use external program for compression"
  • "Parameter passing scheme" should be set to "'Lame MP3 encoder'".
  • enter in "Program, including path, used for compression" the path to your LAME binary (the one you should have remembered, mine in this example is: "C:\Programme\LAME\lame.exe") and apply the changes exactly as shown in the screenshots.
  • advanced users can adjust the lame compression settings in the line "Additional command line options" to their needs, please read the mp3 setting options to find out what settings are the best for you). Dont worry, the line "bitrate" will be ignored as EAC will only use our custom handed options. If you do so then also make sure "Parameter passing scheme" has been set to "user defined encoder".

You can leave the default settings on the tab "Offset", click on "ID3 Tag", and apply changes as shown (make sure you have "Use ID3V2.4.0 tags..." off!):

Now click on "ok". We are almost done.

If you have multiple CD/DVD drives make sure you have the correct one choosen here

Now insert a CD, and you should see the CD content as shown here

If you want, you can tell EAC to look up the CD information for you on the free "freecddb" database, which is might contain wrong information:

(I havent tried it for myself, so no help here)

We can now rip the tracks from the CD, highlight the tracks you want to rip (Ctrl+a to mark all) and click on the mp3 icon to the left

You will be asked for a location where EAC will save the files, create a directory, rename it, double click on it, and click on "Save".

Finished

Thats it.

There are dozens of other things which EAC supports:

  • Normalize rippped tracks
  • Paranoid CD ripping mode
  • Hyperspeed CD ripping mode etc.

This should be enough to rip your CD tracks. Usually I make sure that I use safety settings on ripping, to make sure I do not get skips from the CD in my rips.
