Introduction

In this article we will describe how to add BPM values to your audio files. As SSL does not have any type of auto BPM calculating yet, a third party application to calculate the BPM shall be used to determine the BPM of all your songs.

  • If you know the BPM of your song(s) already, you may double click in the BPM field of the column and manually type in the BPM.
  • For PCs: Mixmeister BPM analyzer (in the following abreviated with MBA is a good shareware application that will automatically calculate the BPM and write it to the info tag of all your songs. Unfortunately MBA is only availible for PCs.
  • For Macs: You can also use an application called Ask the DJ. This application is only for the Mac OS X. The application wil analyze the songs and add BPMs to the ID3 tag BPM fields so SSL can display the BPMs.

Prerequisites

Download and install Mixmeister BPM analyzer.

Start

Start MBA:

Drag and drops your songs into the MBA window, it will immediately start to analyze the tracks. The BPM of tracks which already have a set value will be displayed, tracks which do not have any value will have no value displayed, and tracks which are currently being analyzed will have a percentage value displayed indicating the progress of the analyizing.:

In this example we have 4 tracks:

  1. 'Hip Hop (Love of My Life)' which is being currently analyzed
  2. 'Eye Am Volume Two' which has a BPM of 92 set
  3. 'Rebirth of Ki' which has not BPM set
  4. 'Samurai' which has a BPM of 87.98 set

(BTW, the first three tracks are some very good mixes done by some SSL forum members, check the SSL board for them :) )

You dont have to worry about songs which already have a set value, MBA will simply skip them. This means it is no problem to drag the folder with all your mp3s into MBA, MBA will only calculate the BPMs on songs which do not have a BPM set yet. This also means, if you add new tracks to a folder, you dont have to explicitly pick out that song to calculate the BPM, simply drag the complete folder to MBA.

Finished

It may take some time, until the tracks have been analyzed and the BPMs calculated, but it will all be done automatically. That was it. All your tracks should be ready now.

Known Issues

  • MBA will only save BPMs on mp3 files, not on .wav files.
  • MBA sometimes gives a doubled BPM, esp. on very slow double time hiphop tracks
